Apogee and Perigee of the Moon

Ever thought about how significant the difference in the size of the moon can be? Now, when we say “difference in size”, we actually mean moon’s distance from the earth; as that is what makes it appear smaller or larger to us, if you do ever notice. Here is where the concept of Apogee and Perigee of the moon comes into picture. When the moon appears larger, it’s generally at the closest point to the earth and this stage is called Perigee. Apogee is the exact opposite, i.e. when the moon is at its maximum distance from the earth.

You can compare the 2 sizes of the moon (at apogee and at perigee) in the below picture. This was taken using the same lens.

Thanks to our astronomers, the formulas are there in place, to compute the exact distance of moon from earth at any given point of time. However, the average distance remains 237,700 miles (382,500 km)..

Effects of Apogee and Perigee

When it comes to the tides here on earth, there are a lot of dynamics involved. However, the perigee and apogee of the moon plays a vital role in that. At apogee, as the moon is most distant from the earth, the less gravitational pull contributes to lower tides. And an exact opposite of this, i.e. higher tides happen at perigee, as the moon is closer to the earth.  The effect on the tides might also be in terms of variation in high and low tides.
